Information about the artwork

In graphics, as well as in paintings, of Chagall the circus was a metaphor of dispensation, «play that is done on eternity». at the very beginning the artis determines his circus as "a magical play that lives and fades the same way as the world". Recalling his first child impressions, about acrobats in the streets of Vitebsk, he asks himself a question: «Why? Why am I moved by their make-up and their grimaces?». And answers: «With them I travel on toward other horizons. Their colors and their painted masks draw me toward other, strange, psychic forms which I long to paint». So the circus and not a common theatrical play allowed the artist to find a door from prosiness to a different dimension.
