Information about the artwork
Vashti (from Old Persian: a beautiful woman) (Esth. I, 9) is a Queen, wife of Persian King Ahasuerus, who refused to face the King during the feast, and for that, on the advice of his servitors, was divested of her Queen title. Vashti's place was taken by Esther. Vashti's refusal to follow the King's command was based, as it seems, on the Persian custom, considering humiliating for a woman's honor to appear in front of men at the table.
